British Airways

British Airways is the largest airline in the United Kingdom and the national flag carrier. The British Airways group came into existence in 1974 with the merger of four airlines, two large and two small. The larger airlines were the London based  BOAC (British Overseas Airways Corporation) and BEA (British European Airways) and the two smaller airlines were North East Airlines (Newcastle) and Cambrian Airways (Cardiff). In 1988 the group absorbed British Caledonian and then in 1992 Dan-Air was also acquired.

The British Airways fleet of aircraft includes the largest collection of 747s operated by a single airline and many examples of Boeing and Airbus aircraft.  The international flights only use Heathrow and Gatwick, but there are interconnecting flights from many regional airports in the UK as well as internal flights.  BA's Terminal 5 at Heathrow was opened to much acclaim but experienced severe teething problems before becoming fully operational.  BA carries millions of passengers each year but the total number is often exceeded by the budget airline EasyJet.
